SECTION FIVE : TREATMENT

Synopsis: Tormented by hideous nightmares and premonitions: Lucy, a young college student, begins to find her life becoming unbearable when such nightmares begin to take over. The line between reality and fantasy is blurring. Time is running out.

Mise en scene: Props, set, lighting, costume, hair and makeup.
The props that will be used in the film are:
  • Cauldron
  • Candles
  • Pen and paper
  • Books
  • Voodoo doll and pins
  • Hot water
  • Ipod and earphones
  • Mobile phone
  • Bed, cover and pillows
The film will be set in two locations. The first of the locations is a bedroom, this is where we see Lucy have her nightmare. The room will be simple with just a single bed inside it. This minimalistic setting allows the events/actions to 'tell the story' and the nightmares to be the focal point of the scene. The second location is the forest. Lucy and the witch will be filmed in the same forest, however they will never meet. This is to create a sense of anxiety within the audience as they can see who the witch is but Lucy cannot (dramatic irony). When filming the witch she will be sat in a dark part of the forest on the floor. This dark lighting plays on the connotation of darkness being evil/light being good. Also, we have chosen to have the witch on a lower level to represent the ideology of heaven/hell. By having the witch on the floor she is closer to 'hell' as she has an evil character. She will be surrounded by candles, a cauldron, the voodoo doll and a knife. These props are vital to the storyline as it shows the character of the witch. The candles add a sense of eerieness to the scene. In contrast, when Lucy is filmed in the forest she is seen running through the forest on a higher level. This plays again on the ideology of heaven/hell. The lighting in the forest will be low lit so everything looks dark, it should produce a gloomy effect. Whereas in the bedroom, it will still be dark however the effect will be more eerie to distinguish the difference between characters, reality/fantasy, etc.
Lucy will have two different costumes in the film. She will be wearing pyjamas in the bedroom scene, which will show shes asleep and tie into the storyline and show that the other scenes are a nightmare. In the forest scene Lucy, as well as the other two characters, will be wearing casual clothes. This fits into the setting and distinguishes the line between reality (Lucy in her bed) and fantasy (the forest/dream scene). The witches image will conform to the stereotypical idea of long tatty hair and dark clothing. Lucys hair is long, pretty and flowy, which not only contrasts the witches image but also should create an impression of innocence.

Expression and movement: The witch doesn't move much, we see her pick up the voodoo doll and put pins into it. We also see her write Lucy on a piece of paper, rip it and throw it in the couldron. This is all part of the narrative. As the main character Lucy moves alot in the film. First we see her and her two friends walking, they then come to a halt and talk. During the conversation Lucy is happy and smiling with her friends. She then parts from her friends and walks into the forest, we see that she is calm at first and not bothered about the forest. She then puts her earphones in and feels the back of her head, she looks at her hand to find blood on it, she becomes nervous and confused. She carries on walking at a fast pace looking paranoid, she constantly looks around. She runs to a tree and leans on it to get her breathe back. Lucys arm fling out which she cannot explain, it begins to scare her and we see that shes in fear so she begins to run through the forest. Lucy then grabs her stomach in pain, she carries on walking crouched over until she feels more stomach pain and falls to the ground, her phone falls infront of her and she stretches for it but cannot reach it. We also see flashes of Lucy in bed having a nightmare, however theres little movement and expression in this scene, she tosses and turns in the bed to show shes having a nightmare and at the end we see her sit up in panic and grab her heart in relief to the fact it wasn't real. Girl one is an extra character that is walking with Lucy, we see them walk a short while and see that their happy and smiling, we see them laughing when talking to her each other. This creates a sense of false security with the audience. We then see their concern when Lucy leaves to walk through the forest on her own, then see them walk off. This manipulates the audience through the use of 'redherring'. Throughout the film Lucy has premonitions, and random injuries that she cannot explain. This is using dramatic irony as the audience can see the witch's actions causing this. We see various 'clues' during the film as to the identity of the witch through the use of redherring
