SECTION TWO : RESEARCH INTO COMPARABLE MEDIA PRODUCTS

Donnie Darko : Opening Scene Analysis

The film opens with a black screen and ambient noises. This creates tension by confusing the audience as they cannot see what they hear and wish to keep viewing to find out what is making the noises. We then hear a loud thunder crash, when this occurs and establishing shot of rural landscape is shown. This sets the scene and tone for the film.We then see a shot of a long road with a body lay in the middle. This again creates tension as the audience wants to learn more about the body in the road. Also the long road could connote the long paths in the narrative, eg- life paths. The camera then zooms into the body creating the impression of somebody walking towards it (the camera being that persons vision). This creates the question of - who is this person? within the audiences mind. The body then stands up and the boy laughs. As this happens the title 'Donnie Darko' appears this creates the impression that the boy is Donnie. As Donnie makes his way back home on his bike we see a closeup of a sign for a Halloween themed event. This both has 'spooky' connotations creating a scary tone for the film and also foreshadows narrative.
